Open Community Circles

Join us online or in person for the events below, to experience what math circles are all about!

These are designed generally for all ages, with a focus on adults experiencing what our approach is about.

If you'd like to organize a circle for your community and have 10 people in mind, reach out to avital@theglobalmathcircle.org

Celestial Geometry
‍
Sunday January 26, 2025

2-3:30pm ET main topic

3:30-4:15pm optional further discussion
‍
Online (via Zoom)
In this circle, we’ll start by exploring a question of the ancients: how far apart are two stars on the celestial sphere? From there, we’ll dive into a line of inquiry that is fundamental to modern mathematics, and yet little-known — one of the most famous results of which is the value of π.

Suggested prerequisites (feel free to reach out to taylor@theglobalmathcircle.org with questions):
- Know the Pythagorean Theorem (finding the hypotenuse of a right triangle using the squares of the other two sides)
- Comfortable with algebraic manipulation (including square roots)
- Cannot quickly calculate π from geometry alone (if you don’t know, please don’t look it up — come to our circle instead! :D)

Squirrely Squares

Online (via Zoom)

‍
In this circle, we’ll see how deep mathematics can open up from the simplest of questions. We’ll start with drawing simple shapes on graph paper, and work into mathematical depths ranging from Pythagoras to number theory and more.
‍
Suggested prerequisites (feel free to reach out to taylor@theglobalmathcircle.org with questions):
• Comfort with the concept of area
• Do not have extensive experience with number theory

The Magic of Counting Dots

Dolores Park, San Francisco (find us by the big blackboard)
‍

‍
Starting from very simple questions requiring no math background about counting dots in various arrangements, we quickly discover deep properties about adding series of numbers, combinatorics, and various relationships between shapes and numbers.

This is a great introduction topic to the Global Math Circle approach for all ages and all backgrounds.

No prerequisites. (if you already know a lot, we can offer another topic for you)

Let us know if you are interested by filling out this form. Regardless, feel free to show up at any time.

If you want, bring a snack or drink and a blanket. We'll supply the rest.

Feel free to reach out to avital@theglobalmathcircle.org with questions.
